LANSING, Mich. — Families in Lansing can collect Halloween candy and cast a ballot in the same stop Saturday, when the Lansing City Clerk’s Office holds its Souls to the Polls trunk-or-treat from 2 to 4 p.m.
The free, nonpartisan gathering takes place at the Lansing Elections Office, 701 W. Jolly Road, three days ahead of Tuesday’s general election. Community groups plan to hand out candy, toys and small prizes.
Children get their own version of Election Day. Kids will fill out mock ballots picking a favorite Halloween character and a favorite candy, and they will weigh in on a pretend ballot proposal about sharing treats with children who cannot go trick-or-treating.
Grown-ups can do the real thing. Adults may complete their actual election ballots during the event, and any registered Lansing voter is allowed to vote early in person through Election Day itself.
City Clerk Chris Swope has pitched the afternoon as a way to teach young people how voting works while giving busy residents a convenient extra chance to vote early.
