EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State volleyball had No. 19 Indiana on the ropes Friday night, taking the first two sets at Breslin Center, before the Hoosiers stormed back to win in five.
Michigan State won the opening sets 25-19 and 25-15, then dropped the next three by scores of 19-25, 19-25 and 7-15. The No. 25 Spartans are now 17-4, 7-4 in the Big Ten, after only their fourth loss of the season. Indiana moved to 13-7 and 6-5 in the league.
Over the full match Indiana hit .277 while holding the Spartans to .174. The visitors also won the kill count 55-51, the dig count 49-47 and the block total 12-9. Michigan State held a narrow 12-11 edge in service aces.
The second set was the high point for the home side. Behind a long run at the service line, the Spartans built a 10-1 lead and later closed the set 25-15, with freshman outside hitter Madi Andrews landing three straight aces during one stretch.
Andrews finished with 12 kills, her sixth straight match in double figures, plus eight digs and a career-best five aces. Setter Malayah Long handed out 36 assists and added nine digs, and opposite Hayley Ogden posted six total blocks.
There is no time to regroup. Michigan State hosts No. 1 Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the second half of the toughest home weekend of the season for the program, now in its second year under head coach Kristen Kelsay.
Nebraska has historically drawn big crowds in East Lansing. The last three meetings at Breslin averaged 9,552 fans, compared with a season average of 2,033 for Spartan home matches this fall.
