LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State football used part of its open week to swap the practice field for hospital hallways, as team captains and Zeke the Wonderdog stopped in to see patients at UM Health-Sparrow in Lansing on Tuesday afternoon.
The Spartans spent time with children and their families across the hospital, and the stop included the newborn intensive care unit, where some of the youngest patients are treated.
Quarterback Alessio Milivojecic said bringing a little happiness to families going through a hard stretch was the whole point of the trip.
The visit is part of a team service push for Ronald McDonald House Mid-Michigan and its annual Battle for the Houses fundraiser, which got underway earlier in October and supports families in Lansing and Ann Arbor.
The contest pits the Mid-Michigan and Ann Arbor chapters against each other to see which can raise more money and log more volunteer hours. The chapter that comes out ahead claims a replica of the Paul Bunyan trophy, the prize in the football rivalry between Michigan State and Michigan.
