PASADENA, Calif. — Michigan State carries a 2-5 record and an 0-4 Big Ten mark into the Rose Bowl in Pasadena on Saturday, Oct. 24, where the Spartans meet ninth-ranked UCLA, one of only six teams still unbeaten nationally.
The Bruins are 6-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play under coach Bob Chesney, who took over a team that went 3-9 last year. Pat Fitzgerald, in his first season leading the Spartans, has said losing is a strong enough motivator for his team.
The two programs have not played in Pasadena since the 1966 Rose Bowl, which UCLA won 14-12 on New Year’s Day.
Injuries are piling up in East Lansing. Wednesday’s injury report put two starters, running back Jaziun Patterson and quarterback Alessio Milivojevic, in the questionable column, while a knee injury has sidelined backup quarterback Cam Fancher. UCLA will start Ty Dieffenbach at quarterback for a second straight week after he threw for a career-high 264 yards in a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin.
