MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Michigan State, the Big Ten program based in East Lansing, Mich., wrapped up its preseason with an 86-79 exhibition loss at Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 25, a result that stays off the official ledger but left the Spartans with plenty to clean up on both ends.
Cold shooting early put Michigan State in a 43-31 halftime hole. The Spartans made only 7-of-27 shots in the first half while Marquette hit 15-of-23.
The Golden Eagles stretched the margin to 49-33 early in the second half. Michigan State answered with an 11-0 run, and Jeremy Fears Jr. made it 52-47 at the line with 12:10 to play, but the Spartans got no closer.
Marquette won the boards 33-23 and shot 57.4 percent for the game, including 9-of-18 from 3-point range. Michigan State finished at 39.6 percent.
The trip was the program’s first to Milwaukee to face Marquette since 1956. The Spartans went 1-2 in exhibitions, topping Incarnate Word by a 89-59 count early this month and falling 78-70 to UConn at home last week.
The regular season starts Monday, Nov. 2, when Michigan State hosts Quinnipiac at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
