EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State starts its men’s basketball season at No. 6 with a 7 p.m. home game against Quinnipiac on Monday, Nov. 2, at Breslin Center in East Lansing.
Tom Izzo, now in his 32nd season leading the Spartans, says he has 10 or 11 players he trusts to contribute. Last year’s club went 27-8, finished 15-5 in Big Ten play and made the Sweet 16.
Returning floor leader Jeremy Fears Jr., who posted 15.2 points and a national-best 9.4 assists per game, and forward Coen Carr lead the returners. Jordan Scott and guard Kur Teng add experience. The open question is in the middle, where Michigan State lost both starting big men and has options in Ethan Taylor, a 7-foot-2 freshman, plus Anton Bonke, who came over from Charlotte, and Jesse McCulloch.
The Spartans dropped a 78-70 exhibition to UConn on Oct. 20 after beating Incarnate Word 89-59 earlier this month. Quinnipiac, under coach Tom Pecora, is rebuilding with eight newcomers after four starters transferred. Toledo visits Breslin on Nov. 5 before Michigan State meets Duke in the Champions Classic in Chicago on Nov. 10.
