Lansing Voters to Decide Millage, Health Care Board Questions

LANSING, Mich. — Beyond the races for governor and U.S. Senate, Lansing voters will find two city questions on their Nov. 3 ballots: one about the property tax that pays for basic services, and one that would write a new health care advisory board into the city charter.

The first asks residents to restore the city’s essential services levy to its full charter level of 20 mills. State-required rollbacks have shaved the rate down to 19.2214 mills, so approval would add 0.7786 mills for five years, from Jan. 1, 2027, through the end of 2031. The money is earmarked for police, fire protection and upkeep of local roads and sidewalks, and the city estimates the restored levy would bring in about $2.59 million in its first full year.

The second proposal is a charter amendment creating a Citizens’ Advisory Healthcare Action Board. That panel would be charged with drafting a Lansing Healthcare Action Plan, publishing it and recommending ways to bring down costs and widen access to care for residents.

City leaders voted to put both questions before voters, and each needs only a simple majority to pass. Early in-person voting is underway through Nov. 1, and on Election Day itself, voting runs from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.
