LANSING, Mich. — The city of Lansing hosted a public Indigenous Peoples Day celebration Monday afternoon at City Hall, bringing community members together for speakers, traditional dancing, singing and drumming.
City government and the Lansing Police Department organized the indoor program in the City Hall lobby after last year outdoor event. Dozens of people attended.
Lansing Police Chief Robert Backus said members of his department helped create the event last year and continued organizing it this year. He said the department values and respects the cultures represented in the city and within its workforce.
Mayor Andy Schor spoke to attendees and issued a mayoral proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day.
Organizers framed the gathering as a chance for residents to honor Indigenous culture in the capital city and to strengthen ties between public agencies and community members.
The celebration coincided with the federal Indigenous Peoples Day observance and filled the City Hall lobby with music and dance performances for those who attended.
