EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State hockey ran into its first real setback of the season Friday night, as No. 13 Boston University built a four-goal cushion and held on for a 6-2 win over the third-ranked Spartans in East Lansing.
The Terriers struck first on a power play just 5:49 into the game, and Kamil Bednarik made it 2-0 with 1:56 left in the first. Sophomore Carter Amico pushed it to 3-0 at 11:37 of the second and the lead reached 4-0 about three minutes later, and the fourth goal ended the night for freshman goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen, who was replaced after giving up four goals on 20 shots. Junior Quentin Sigurdson played the rest of the way.
Michigan State answered early in the third. Sophomore Ryker Lee scored on a power play at 4:21, and Caden Lindstrom added another about two minutes later to pull the Spartans within two. A bench minor for too many skaters, whistled with 3:58 left, gave the visitors a power play, and they scored on it before adding an empty-net goal.
Amico finished with two goals for Boston University. Michigan State outshot the Terriers 35-24 but could not solve their goaltender for most of the night.
The loss drops Michigan State to 5-2, while Boston University improved to 7-2. The two teams close the weekend series Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
