LANSING, Mich. — Michigan’s delegation to the U.S. House looked mostly familiar after Tuesday’s election, but two Republican incumbents were trailing early Wednesday in the statewide election and one open seat remained close as counting continued.

In the 7th District, Rep. Tom Barrett was behind challenger William Lawrence 51.0% to 47.8%, a gap of about 12,500 votes with roughly 96% of the expected vote counted. Lawrence had trailed by more than 18 points early in the night. In the 4th District, Rep. Bill Huizenga trailed Sean McCann 50.3% to 48.2%, about 7,400 votes, after McCann erased an 8-point deficit.

The 10th District, left open when John James ran for governor, was still a tight contest between Democrat Christina Hines and Republican Michael Bouchard across parts of Oakland and Macomb counties.

Incumbents won elsewhere. Republicans Jack Bergman in the 1st, John Moolenaar in the 2nd, Tim Walberg in the 5th and Lisa McClain in the 9th held their seats. Moolenaar won a seventh term over Democrat Ben Ambrose, and Walberg is headed to his 10th term. Democrats Hillary Scholten in the 3rd, Debbie Dingell in the 6th, Kristen McDonald Rivet in the 8th and Rashida Tlaib in the 12th were reelected, with Dingell beating Republican Heather Smiley for a seventh term and Tlaib defeating Republican James Hooper for a fifth.

Two new Democrats are headed to Congress. Democrat Jeremy Moss won the 11th District. State Rep. Donavan McKinney took the Detroit-based 13th District with 75.5% of the vote over Republican T.P. Nykoriak and will succeed U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar, whom he defeated in the Democratic primary.

Nationally, Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress on Tuesday.
