Election Day in Lansing: Polls, Monitors and Two-Sided Ballots

LANSING, Mich. — Polls across Lansing open at 7 a.m. Tuesday and stay open until 8 p.m., and anyone already in line at closing time will still get to cast a ballot.

Ingham County ballots carry races and questions on the front and the back this year, so county election officials are reminding voters to flip the sheet over before they finish. Officials also suggest confirming a polling location before leaving home. County Clerk Barb Byrum noted that campaigning is barred within 100 feet of a polling place entrance, which means campaign gear has to be covered inside that zone.

Federal observers will be watching, too. The U.S. Department of Justice is assigning monitors Tuesday to Lansing, East Lansing and five other Michigan cities, after notifying them in October. State officials have said those monitors must follow Michigan law and may not interfere with voters or poll workers.

Statewide, about 2.3 million people, or 31.2% of active registered voters, had voted before Election Day. Anyone still holding an absentee ballot should skip the mail and take it to a city clerk or an official drop box by 8 p.m. Residents who are not registered can still register in person at the local clerk’s office by showing proof of where they live.

The ballot includes the open governor and U.S. Senate races, two statewide proposals and local contests. Unofficial results will be posted on county clerk websites as counting moves forward.
