LANSING, Mich. — Eleven new recruits have completed the Corrections Academy at Lansing Community College, adding trained candidates for jail jobs that agencies across Michigan are working to fill.
The class spent four weeks and 160 hours in training at the college’s West Campus. Lessons covered custody and security procedures, the mental health of inmates and emergency first aid.
The college says the full curriculum also includes correctional law, stress management, cultural diversity and ethics, along with CPR.
Graduating is not the last step. Each recruit still has to pass a state certification exam. Those who pass can then seek certification from the Michigan Sheriff Coordinating and Training Council, which sets minimum hiring standards for jail officers statewide.
Once certified, the new officers can work in local facilities anywhere in the state, the college said.
