LANSING, Mich. — With Halloween falling on a Saturday, Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth says the danger he worries about most tonight is traffic, as children fan out through Lansing-area neighborhoods.
Trick-or-treating in Lansing runs from 6 to 8 p.m., the same porch-light window used in East Lansing, Holt, Okemos, Mason and most other Greater Lansing communities.
The sheriff’s office plans to put extra deputies on the road Halloween night, and Wriggelsworth said those patrols will concentrate on residential streets as calls allow. His main message for drivers is to slow to a crawl, because excited kids tend to dart from one side of the street to the other.
He also asked families to keep children in groups and have them walk instead of run. Kids in dark costumes should carry glow sticks or wear reflectors, and homeowners handing out treats should light up their porches and driveways.
After the night is over, the sheriff recommends parents look through the candy haul before children dig in. The evening should be mild, with the weather service calling for a high near 66 and a low near 51.
