LANSING, Mich. — Lansing Eastern boys soccer has picked up the first Team of the Month award in a new statewide recognition from the Michigan High School Athletic Association, a fitting cap on the strongest season the Quakers have ever had.
The award looks back at September. That month Eastern beat St. Johns on Sept. 22 to clinch the CAAC Red, its first league championship ever. Roughly two weeks after that, the Quakers won the conference Gold Cup for the first time, edging Okemos 2-1 in a shootout.
By the end of the regular season, coaches around the state had Eastern at No. 3 in Division 2, and the team finished 17-2-3 overall. Just two seasons earlier, the program had won only four games and went 4-12-1.
Thursday brought the season to a close at DeWitt. The Panthers took the Division 2 district title 1-0 behind a first-half strike from freshman Jake Wever, giving DeWitt a district crown for the seventh time in eight years.
