MIDLAND, Mich. — Lansing Catholic left the Lower Peninsula Division 4 boys tennis finals with a flight title Thursday, as its senior No. 1 singles player beat a Goodrich opponent 6-2, 6-2 at the Midland Tennis Center.
The win runs in the family. The new champion’s uncle claimed a top singles crown for the school 25 years ago, back in Division 3, and later played college tennis at Pepperdine.
The team trophy went to Jackson Lumen Christi, which earned its first boys tennis Finals championship with 24 points over the two-day event. Ludington and Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett tied for second with 20 apiece.
Lumen Christi, last year’s runner-up, put six of its eight flights into the semifinals despite spending the fall without home courts while its own were rebuilt. The Titans clinched at No. 3 doubles with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the top seed from Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian.
Ludington swept the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles brackets, and Grandville Calvin Christian won at No. 1 doubles.
