GRANBURY, Texas — The University of Michigan men’s golf team finished its fall season on an upswing Wednesday, posting its best round of the week to jump two places and take fourth at the Abilene Christian Intercollegiate.
The Wolverines started the final round sixth in the nine-team field at Halbert National. A 4-under 284, their only team round under par in the event, moved them past Missouri and Tulsa. Michigan got better every day, going 296, 293 and 284 for a 54-hole total of 873, a 12-shot improvement from the first round to the last.
RJ Arone led the way all week. The senior shot 70, 72 and 70 to finish fourth among 48 players at 4-under 212. It was the third time this fall he placed in the top five.
Freshman Mackey Beckett supplied the final-day spark. After rounds of 78 and 75, he posted a career-best 68, Michigan’s low round of the tournament, and climbed into a tie for 22nd at 221.
Dean Muratore shot an even-par 72 on the last day to tie for 26th at 222, matching Jordan Hwang, who carded 74 in all three rounds. Nilay Naik tied for 29th at 223.
The Texas event closed out a seven-tournament fall schedule that opened with a team title at the Island Resort Intercollegiate in Bark River in September. Michigan is off for nearly five months and opens its spring season in California at the Pauma Valley Collegiate, set for March 15-17.
