LANSING, Mich. — Lansing graduates chasing a four-year degree have one more school on their list. Lansing Promise, the scholarship program for students in the Lansing School District, made Oakland University an eligible partner at a signing on Oct. 20.
OU joins Michigan State, Central Michigan and the University of Olivet among the universities where Promise Scholars can put the money to work. The Central Michigan deal came just last month, and the group’s board set a target in July of reaching agreements with every public university in the state.
Executive Director Jayme King framed the deal as a way to strip away cost as a reason students skip college.
Award sizes depend on how long a student has been in the district. A full scholarship, open to students who spend four years in district schools, is worth as much as $20,000 toward a bachelor’s degree at an approved university, or up to $10,000 for Lansing Community College or a licensing program such as cosmetology or barbering. Families can find details through the program’s website.
