PALO ALTO, Calif. — Michigan women’s golf ran into one of the strongest fields on its fall schedule at the Stanford Intercollegiate, where every one of the 17 teams carried a national ranking. The Wolverines wrapped up the three-round event on Sunday in 16th place at 902, shooting 302 in each of the last two rounds after an opening 298.
Sophomore Vanessa Zhang was the bright spot. She opened with a 72, one over par and the team’s lowest round of the week, then shot 74 and 75 to tie for 45th at 221. That total beat her previous best 54-hole score this fall by four strokes.
Junior Thomasine Bartholdson shook off an 80 on Saturday and posted a Sunday 75 that included four birdies, three coming over her last eight holes, good for a share of 74th place at 228. Martha Kuwahara, a freshman, finished at 229, tied for 77th, and sophomore Reese Ng got better every day, going 79, 77 and 75 to tie for 82nd at 231 with teammate Jaymie Ng.
The host school ran away with the event. Stanford finished 28 under par on its par-71 home course to win the team title, and Meja Ortengren took medalist honors at 14 under. Big Ten rival Northwestern placed fourth at 862.
Michigan has one stop left this fall, the Pat Bradley Invitational hosted by Florida International Oct. 26 and 27 in Miami Lakes, Florida. That 54-hole event plays 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second.
