EAST LANSING, Mich. — East Lansing city lawyers said Friday they are dropping any local case against Myanna Collins tied to an Aug. 2 arrest outside Harper’s Restaurant and Brewpub, ending weeks of scrutiny that began after a bystander video spread online.
East Lansing City Attorney Carlito Young said his office finished reviewing the file after county prosecutors on Sept. 18 refused to validate charges from the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office. Young stressed that declining to charge Collins is not a finding against the East Lansing Police Department officers who made the arrest.
Officials said the East Lansing Police Department will post body-camera clips from the stop once privacy edits are finished. The city said those edits are meant to shield Collins, nearby bystanders and other personal details the law requires to stay private.
Coverage of the Aug. 2 clip described an officer striking Collins while she was already on the ground with her hands held behind her. The city still has not identified the officers on that call. Young said both Collins’s family and the officers have endured a hard two months and that ending the charging question does not end the department’s duty to treat everyone fairly.
