LANSING, Mich. — People who asked Michigan for more time on their individual income tax returns must get a finished filing to the Department of Treasury by Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2026.

Extended returns may go by mail or e-file. Treasury aligned the date with the federal extension calendar so filers face one shared cutoff.

Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale said residents who have not filed may still qualify for refunds through available credits, and people who owe should call Treasury to talk through payment choices.

Extra time to submit paperwork does not pause the bill. Interest and late-payment penalties keep accruing from the original spring due date until the tax is paid. Filers who cannot clear the balance at once should send what they can with the return; Treasury says it will work on a plan for the rest.

Refunds can disappear if a return is not filed within four years of the original due date. E-file help is posted at michigan.gov/mifastfile.

Through Oct. 12, Treasury said it had handled more than 5.2 million individual returns and sent out about $3.89 billion in refunds. People can pay through Treasury eServices, authorize a bank draft when they e-file, or mail a check with the matching voucher. Any payment that arrives after the April due date is late even when the filing date was extended.
