LANSING, Mich. — Shovels hit the dirt Wednesday for a replacement Sheridan Road School in Lansing, kicking off a grades 5-8 campus the district says will reshape middle-grade learning for the city.
District chief Jessica Benavides pointed to excited Sheridan Road and Luton families who will come back to fresh buildings within a few years. Plans call for rooms built around arts, media, fitness and teamwork.
Leaders frame the site as a STEM magnet for those grades. Until the walls rise, Sheridan Road pupils attend Riddle Elementary at 221 Huron St., just off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Kalamazoo Street.
Money comes from a roughly $129.7 million tax package approved in 2022 and about $5 million more from the sinking fund the Board of Education cleared in early September. Mt. Hope and Willow elementary projects already finished under the same push.
Sheridan Road and Lewton are both targeted for 2028 openings. Wednesday’s ceremony formally opened the Sheridan Road construction phase.
Benavides holds the superintendent post for Lansing schools. Andy Schor is mayor of the Ingham County seat.
