Lansing, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said Monday it is investing $3.4 million in opioid settlement funds to expand recovery residences, adding an estimated 205 new beds across 14 counties including Ingham County.
Through the Recovery Housing Investment Program, MDHHS partnered with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority to award competitive grants to 18 agencies that will purchase or lease 24 new recovery residences.
Acting MDHHS director Amy Epkey said the investment aims to give people in recovery more stable housing support. MSHDA CEO Amy Hovey said housing is foundational to rebuilding employment, family ties and independence.
Grant sizes vary by provider. Pinnacle Recovery Group in Ingham County is slated for 23 additional beds, among the larger local allotments in the latest round.
MDHHS said earlier Recovery Housing Investment Program rounds helped create 136 recovery beds at 18 properties in six counties. The state expects more than $1.8 billion from national opioid settlements by 2040, with half flowing to a state fund and half to local governments.
