A federal jury in Marquette has convicted a northern Lower Michigan man of sexually abusing a child in the Upper Peninsula, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Eric Scott May, 39, of Pellston, was found guilty of two counts of sexual abuse of a minor, according to U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy VerHey. Court records show the trial began Monday.

Jurors heard evidence that between February and March 2025, May engaged in sexual acts with a child between the ages of 12 and 15. A witness testified that May exploited the child while the child was in his care. The criminal complaint places the abuse at a residence in Sault Ste. Marie.

Prosecutors said the jury was also given proof that May had previously sexually exploited a different child who was under 12 at the time. May has a lengthy criminal history that includes more than 10 prior felony convictions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

VerHey said prosecutors will tell the judge at sentencing why May should face a long prison sentence. May will be sentenced this winter.

The FBI, the Sault Tribe Police Department and Michigan State Police investigated the case.
