LANSING, Mich. — Hundreds of people from around greater Lansing turned the grounds of the Michigan State Capitol into a walking route for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and the event has brought in more than $100,000 for dementia research.

The Lansing walk is among the largest fundraisers the Alzheimer’s Association holds. Walkers checked in at 11 a.m. at the Capitol, 100 N. Capitol Ave., and the opening ceremony started at noon.

The money supports the group’s research funding and its work teaching the public about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

Organizers said one goal was simply getting the word out that the association exists and offers support to families. Wider awareness also helps scientists recruit patients for trials of new Alzheimer’s treatments.

The walk is run through the association’s Greater Michigan chapter, based in Southfield. Families looking for help can reach the association’s Alzheimer’s and dementia helpline around the clock at 800-272-3900.
