ATHENS, Ohio — One early goal was all Ohio needed on Sunday. The Bobcats scored inside the opening eight minutes and made it stand up for a 1-0 Mid-American Conference win over Eastern Michigan, handing the Eagles their third loss in a row.
Ella Deevers put Ohio ahead, slipping a shot through a crowd of defenders off a ball from Jaimason Brooker with 7:56 gone. Neither side scored again.
Eastern Michigan had its chances. The Eagles took 13 shots, their most in a match since they fired 14 at Central Michigan on Sept. 20, and edged Ohio 13-12 in total attempts and 6-5 in corners. Olivia Sipsock led EMU with four shots, including a 23rd-minute try from 16 yards that drew a strong stop. Ohio freshman goalkeeper Ayla Rammel turned away all four Eastern shots on target for the shutout.
At the other end, EMU goalkeeper Ella Holland played the full 90 minutes and made four saves. It was her 50th straight start, and she now has 299 career saves at Eastern, the second-highest total since Eastern began keeping box scores behind Kaylin Williams with 314.
Eastern Michigan is now 4-3-1 against MAC opponents and 6-4-4 on the season. Ohio, which also came in on a two-game skid, moved to 5-8-1 and 2-5-1. Ohio holds a 16-13-5 edge in the all-time series.
Eastern Michigan returns home Saturday, Oct. 24, to face Toledo in Ypsilanti.
