LANSING, Mich. — In Lansing, Mich., state officials are warning older adults to watch for scams and high-pressure sales tactics as Medicare annual open enrollment approaches, with the period running from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7.

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services say scammers may try to steal personal information or money during enrollment season.

DIFS Director Anita Fox said the best protection is never sharing information with anyone who contacts residents unexpectedly by phone, mail, online or in person. MDHHS Acting Director Amy Epkey encouraged people who need help comparing plans to contact MI Options for free counseling from certified counselors at 800-803-7174.

Officials advise protecting Medicare identification numbers, ignoring unsolicited callers even when they claim to represent Medicare, and calling 1-800-MEDICARE to verify a caller. They also warn that Medicare Part D prescription coverage is voluntary and that mailings can look official while coming from private companies.

Agencies say the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will not call or send someone to a home, and insurance agents cannot claim a government agency directed them to make contact.

With open enrollment approaching, residents reviewing coverage should compare doctors, prescriptions and personal needs carefully and use official counseling channels rather than unexpected sales pitches.
