LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing branch of the NAACP celebrated its 60th Freedom Fund Dinner Sunday night, filling every available seat for a fundraiser tied to scholarships, voting advocacy and civil rights work.

Branch president James McCurtis Jr. said the room carried energy and excitement for the local organization, which he said has been doing work in Lansing for 107 years.

The dinner is a signature annual fundraiser for the branch. Officials said they are seeking more members and pointed supporters to naacplansing.org to join.

The Lansing Branch NAACP describes its mission as securing political, educational, social and economic equality and ending race-based discrimination. Adult membership meetings are listed for the first Sunday of each month.

For Lansing, Mich., the packed Freedom Fund Dinner marked six decades of the branch’s signature fall gathering as organizers push for new membership after Sunday’s celebration.
