LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced state-backed redevelopment projects in Calumet and Grand Haven that are expected to add housing and commercial space across both peninsulas with more than $5.9 million in total capital investment.
The projects draw on the bipartisan Revitalization and Placemaking program and the Michigan Community Revitalization Program. Whitmer said the grants help create neighborhoods that attract workers, add housing, and open doors for new businesses.
In the Village of Calumet, long-vacant buildings at 425 and 427 5th Street will become seven residential apartments and three commercial spaces, with apartments expected to list between 50% and 100% of Area Median Income and one accessible first-floor unit. A $1.1 million RAP grant will support historic rehabilitation toward a total anticipated capital investment of $3,677,527.
MEDC community development leader David Meninga said the projects fit the Make It in Michigan economic development strategy by strengthening local economies and quality of life. Stabilization work in Calumet dates to 2011 under the downtown authority and Houghton County Land Bank.
Village President Rob Tarvis said bringing the historic buildings back strengthens downtown Calumet and preserves local character. Developer Nathan McParlan of MCP Properties is leading the Calumet work. A companion Grand Haven mixed-use project is also receiving Michigan Community Revitalization Program support as part of the same statewide announcement.
